The Top 10 Best SNES Games of All-Time

Many game reviewers have created their list of the best SNES games ever. This is another interpretation of the top 10 best SNES games ever created. This list is obviously one author’s opinion, but it is a solid list overall that incorporates many different considerations in the choosing of each game.

10 – Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting – This game increased the speed and added special techniques to what was already one of the premiere fighting games of the time. Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting restored more balance into the game play of a great game series.

9 – EarthBound – Also known as Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back, EarthBound was a role-playing video game for the SNES. The game was a great success in Japan and is considered by critics to be one of the greatest RPGs on the SNES, as well as one of the best RPGs of the 1990s.

8 – Final Fantasy II – Although not as ground breaking in the graphics department, FFII was praised for its content and the game’s length. It added many of the features to the Final Fantasy series that fans would later come to expect from all Final Fantasy games.

7 – Mega Max X – Capcom’s release for the SNES was a critical success. Mega Man X brought a new image to the series and was responsible for over a dozen follow-up and spin off games. It was identical to its predecessor series Mega Man, but added a host of new features to the game.

6 – Chrono Trigger – Both commercially successful and lauded by reviewers, Chrono Trigger has sold millions of copies since its release. It is considered not only as one of the best games for the SNES, but one of the best games on any console of all time.

5 – Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars – Often referred to simply as the Super Mario RPG, this game was first released in 1996 to great reviews. The game setting was well received and garnered great praise from both fans and reviewers for the quality of the graphics and visual style.

4 – Super Mario World – The best platform game ever created for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The Super Mario series just happens to also be the most popular platform game series ever created. The game has been released multiple times and multiple platforms and sold millions of copies.

3 – Final Fantasy III – The first of the Final Fantasy games to feature the job-change system. This, and other revolutionary developments, has made FFIII stand out as one of the best, if not the best, game in a series of great games. It still continually makes many reviewer lists as one of the best games ever.

2 – Super Metroid – Although the Metroid series did not originally reach the commercial success that some of its counterparts did, Super Metroid was given near-universal acclaim upon release. It is considered by many to be one of the best, if not the best, 2d action adventure game ever.

1 – The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past – Acclaimed for its graphics and game play, A Link to the Past is generally recognized as one of the greatest games for any console platform of all time. The game was a massive success in both Japan and the United States and has been re-released on multiple platforms since its debut on the SNES.

That is it. That was one author’s submission for the top 10 best SNES games ever. The list, like all top 10, top 25, or top 100 lists is completely subjective to the preferences of the author. This is a pretty solid list though when you consider series popularity, game units sold, and overall game reviews. What is your list of the best SNES games?
